Structural Health Monitoring

The use of monitoring in the infrastructure is very important because the objectives of this technology are to detect and assess the level of damage to the civil infrastructure. This damage is due to sever loading caused by natural loads or man made events and / or environmental deterioration. Damage identification is performed based on identification of changes in response features of the structure as measured by deployed sensor arrays.
The above requires a broad use of different sensors adapted for any parameter which is important to be monitored. The equipment very often used is a conventional type vibration wires, strain gages, accelerometers. Inclinometers, Extensometers etc. The Fiber optic sensor usage is the most recent development spreading more and more in important projects due to their high sensitivity, reliability and long life expectancy.
The software framework permits real-time sensor data collection, database and archiving systems, data analysis and interpretation, visualization, probability risk analysis and rational statistical decision making procedures.
The use of satellite communication (GPS) gives the ability to monitor from long distance and getting data to more than one place with central management to the monitoring system.
Gabi Shoef Ltd. offers Health monitoring services in infrastructure for various applications e.g: tunnels, bridges, buildings and more.

Tunnels:
Common tunnel monitoring schemes consist of:
Extensometers - Monitor the movements of soil or rock layers around the tunnel
Divergence meters - Measure the pressure at the tunnel walls
Ground Penetrating Radar - Scans the presence of cavities, voids etc. in the bottom of the excavated tubes.
Laser beam & benchmarks measurement - monitors vertical displacement of the tunnel ground and possible geometrical deformations.
Inclinometers - measure and monitor possible inclinations.
Strain gages / Load cells - monitor loads of the anchors, crack openings and more.
Pressure cells - Measure the pressure between the rocks and the concrete.

Bridges:
Testing of changes in the columns and beams, inclination, quality of the concrete, quality of the grouting in the tendons, and more.

Structural Health Monitoring Bridges

Buildings
Monitoring of inclinations, crack openings and dangerous vibration according DIN and other standards.
